What is fake (Flash) cryptocurrency?
Fake (Flash) cryptocurrency is tokens that look and price like real cryptocurrencies, but cannot actually be used or sold on exchanges. They show up in wallets as real coins — with the right icon, price and balance.
Does fake cryptocurrency really exist?
50/50. Every wallet is unique. Some wallets do not pull token data directly from blockchains or DEX platforms, which makes it impossible for fake assets to appear in your wallet as real. There are also wallets that do pull that data and allow fake tokens to be created. Below is more detail on all possible types of fake (flash) tokens.

Real types of fake cryptocurrency
Compromised assets
Some tokens used to be real but lost their value because of hacks or network issues. One example is the Fantom network, where old tokens can sometimes be bought cheap. These tokens may show in Tier-1 wallets until the issue is fixed.
Trust Wallet
A copy of the original, network — Solana only. Solana has a DEX where fake liquidity can be added — Trust Wallet will accept it.
SafePal
A copy of the original, network — Solana (image comes from metadata).
MetaMask
A copy of the original: EVM network (no images), Solana (built-in metadata, so there will be an image).
WEB3 Binance, Bybit, OKX
Any tokens can be made, including copies of originals.
Tonkeeper / TONSPACE
Tokens for TON wallets are more or less dead: they were made for about a year, and TonSpace fully removed the display.
CoinBase
Network — Solana (an image can be made).
Exodus
This is more of a script than fake crypto. It is tied to the wallet reading mempool data: you can send a transaction with tiny gas that validators will not pick up, and because of that a balance is displayed.
